Helgi Þór breaks down

Life can be so depressing!

Life is a bit depressing at Jón's funeral parlour. But a spark of life ignites for Jón's cosmetologist son, Helgi Þór, when a relative of the dead body he is working on appears – a young girl whom he knows. They chat cheerfully and are beginning to understand each other and connect when Jón enters the scene, panting and breathless. He says that he has seen visions and predicts that Helgi's life is in great danger. And so everything begins. Helgi Þór Breaks Down is a hilarious and exciting play about whether Helgi Þór can avoid his fate, rid himself of the spell and stop believing in prophesies.

This is the fifth play premiered by Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson at Reykjavik City Theatre. Few new-generation playwrights have attracted as much attention or gained as much favour as Tyrfingsson. His previous plays – Kartöfluæturnar (Potato Eaters), Auglýsing ársins (Advertisment of the Year), Bláskjár (Blue Screen) and Skúrinn á sléttunni (Little Shed on the Prairie) – have been shown in Iceland and featured in drama festivals elsewhere in Europe. A new production of Potato Eaters is due to be staged in one of the most respected theatres in the Netherlands, Toneelgroep Oostpool, which has also secured the rights to this new play: Helgi Þór Breaks Down.
