Uncle Vanya

Is the whole world for sale?

A professor returns to the country home of his late wife, accompanied by his new wife, the young, irresistible Yelena. Over the years, the professor's daughter from his first marriage and Vanja, his dead wife's brother, have worked their fingers to the bone keeping the place going. But the professor is now old and grouchy and is planning radical changes. Vanya is beset with desperation and hopelessness in the face of the inevitable intense showdown.

Uncle Vanya is one of Anton Chekhov's great masterpieces and considered by many to be one of his most enjoyable plays. Despite the shattered hopes and the grief, the play is packed with wit and natural levity. It portrays the clash between different attitudes towards life – luxury and greed against the love of nature and the earth. How can we go on living when the painful truth about our purpose and status in life becomes apparent? Uncle Vanya is one of Chekhov's most often performed plays. This production is directed by Brynhildur Guðjónsdóttir, who directed the popular production of Richard III last season.
