The whole story begins with a photo album bought by performing artist Friðgeir Einarsson at a flea market in Belgium. We do not know the people on the pictures, and it is a mystery why the album was on sale. Had it been stolen? Had it been lost? Or maybe thrown away? The only thing that we do know is that a Belgium woman went on holiday to Mallorca forty years ago, drank sangria, went to the beach, had a go on a pedalo and took pictures of herself and her friend.

Club Romantica

Whatever did happen to the woman in the picture?

The whole story begins with a photo album bought by performing artist Friðgeir Einarsson at a flea market in Belgium. We do not know the people on the pictures, and it is a mystery why the album was on sale. Had it been stolen? Had it been lost? Or maybe thrown away? The only thing that we do know is that a Belgium woman went on holiday to Mallorca forty years ago, drank sangria, went to the beach, had a go on a pedalo and took pictures of herself and her friend.

After ten years of mulling it over, Friðgeir finally decides to try and track down the rightful owner of the album and return it. This requires extensive research, working out the relationships between the people on the pictures and finding out what may have become of them.

In Club Romantica, Friðgeir introduces the audience to the people on the pictures, tells their story and reveals what in the end happened to this Belgian woman. Along the way, he wonders what happens to our photo albums and memories when we finally drop off the radar. Who will tell our story? Will anybody remember us forty years from now? Accompanying Friðgeir on stage is musician Snorri Helgason, who composed music especially for this play.

Friðgeir Einarsson has worked with teams such as the Kriðpleir Theatre Group, 16 Lovers and the Icelandic Dance Company. He has also published two books: a collection of small stories entitled Takk fyrir að láta mig vita (Thanks for Letting Me Know) and a novel entitled Formaður húsfélagsins (Chairman of the Housing Association).

Club Romantica was awarded Best Play in the 2019 Gríman Icelandic Performing Arts Awards and was nominated for three other awards: Best Performance, Best Director (Pétur Ármannsson) and Best Music (Snorri Helgason).

In co-operation with the Abendshow Theatre Group.

This project is supported by the Drama Council of the Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.
